In a joint effort
to educate the Hip-Hop generation about the importance of voting
and the critical role they will play in election 2004, Luke “Uncle
Luke” Campbell and State Representative James “Hank”
Harper, Jr., will launch “Election 2004: The Movement Tour”
on March 27 at Florida Memorial College in Miami.
The Tour’s
mission is to register 40,000 new voters in Florida within the Hip-Hop
generation by
July 2004, beginning at Florida Memorial College and
making stops at four historically black colleges and other major
universities in Florida. The meetings will feature demonstrations
of the county’s new voting machines and the distribution of
voter education materials prepared by election officials and nonpartisan
organizations.
Voters will
be provided with information on what to expect at the polls, new
voting procedures, the impact of legislative redistricting on the
location of polling places, voter’s bill of rights, and the
election protection hotline. There will also be poll worker recruitment.
“It is
imperative that we organize and reach the voters of the Hip-Hop
generation in the summer months not just on Election Day,”
said Luke “Uncle Luke” Campbell. “We want this
tour to carry a strong message to the Hip-Hop generation about the
importance of becoming actively involved in the political process.”

“Together
we strive to accomplish the goal of registering at least 40,000
new voters for election 2004 because it is incumbent upon black
lawmakers, community leaders, business leaders, civil rights and
religious leaders, and other public figures to take steps now to
guarantee our constituencies are registered and have access to the
polls on August 31, 2004,” said Rep. James “Hank”
Harper, Jr. “We must ensure that the Hip-Hop generation’s
votes will be counted on election day.”
